Josh sent Glenn a text message to see how his job interview went. The text read, “How’d it go?” You see, Josh had been best friends with Glenn his best buddy since grade school. Josh and Glenn did everything together. They built forts, tree houses, and raced against each other on their bikes. The many hours they would talk while building something or exploring their neighborhood. They would eat over each other’s house and see each other almost every day.
They were now adults, and as adults they would call or text each other on a regular basis. They both had families, and they would regularly communicate to see how each other’s wives and children were doing. Furthermore, they each keep up with all the important dates and events like wedding anniversaries, birthdates, pre-school graduations, junior high school graduations and all the important stuff. They were more than best friends, they were brothers.
We often look at business relationships in a totally different perspective than our personal relationships. The question is, why?
What makes our personal relationships so rich, full, and meaningful? What keeps that lasting connection?
Relationships are built through communication. The more we communicate, the better we get to know the people we are in a relationship with, and the more we show just how important we are to each other as we connect. We know we are significant to the people in our lives that take the time to show us they care when they take the time to pay us attention.
This is the same attitude we should take when we interact with customers. We should take the time to talk to the customer, get to know a little bit about them, and try and remember them the next time we see or communicate with them. Think of your customer as a friend and try to be a good friend to the customer. This makes great business sense!
