My teenager has put up this wall and no matter what I say I get a defensive attitude. Should I just leave her alone and wait for this phase she is going through to end?
Answer:
Quite often the brick wall is a barrier of defense (wants control/independence) we encounter with many people including teens. You may remember just a few years earlier this same teen was a cute, adorable and loving child ready and eager to please, and now they want little to do with adults especially their parents.
John loved sports and his parents were well aware of this and decided to use this interest and passion of his to reach him.
Hey John your favorite basketball team will be in town, what if we could get tickets to the game... would you like to go?
Well sure!
Guide On “He Say…She Say” The Art Of Great Communication
I think the team has a meet the players session before the game, and you can get the chance to meet the team and your favorite players on the team. How would you like to meet the players?
You bet...I would love to meet the players before the game. Wow...that would be so awesome!
Hey let me ask you something John. What if we went to the meet the players session, and you met your all time favorite player, and he just snub you and didn’t want to be bothered with you, what would you think?
Well...I would wonder what his problem was and probably think he was being a jerk. Just because he is a famous star, that doesn’t give him the right to be so high and mighty.
Well John, that’s the way we feel when we want to talk to our favorite star in our family...You, and you snub us and don’t want to have anything to do with us...We realize we may not be the coolest parents in the world, but we just want to talk sometimes, and see what’s going on in your world.
You see, what you want to do is find something your teen can relate to and has a passion for, use in an a story or example to connect, and get beyond that brick wall. John’s parents may have to buy tickets now, but they also got through to their son. It may take several try’s, and it will still be a challenge. How much is true happiness in a relationship worth?
